Golden Ticket

Last November I received the best e-mail EVER from my Mom.  I immediately printed it out, and hugged that piece of paper to my chest and twirled around the house singing that song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

“….I’ve got a golden ticket!  I’ve golden ticket!  I’ve golden star up in the sky!”

Cause that’s exactly what I felt like!  I had received a golden ticket into the secret sweets factory.
I had received Grannie Dot’s Doughnut Recipe!
(I could seriously cry writing this right now! )
As long as I can remember, for any type of family get together, or birthday, or sometimes just because, My Grannie Dot has made homemade doughnuts by the basketful.  I remember watching her roll out the dough and use her special doughnut cutter to get them just right.  It would seem like it took the doughnuts days to rise and then she would fry them up one at a time.  My sister and I would fight over who would get the first one fresh out of the bowl with all that sugary white icing dripping down our fingers.  When they were all done, she would load them into a brown picnic basket with a red and white checked cloth.  I swear cheers would erupt when she came in the door with that basket of goodness and diner would practically be skipped.
Over the years we’ve tried to sit down with Grannie Dot and nail down the recipe.  She is 88 years old and a recipe that has be handed down for generations and generations.  The problem has always been, there really just weren’t any measurements.  I would say, “How much flour?”  and she would say, “Oh, until it looks right.”  See the issue here?  Grannie Dot is the only one who knows what “looks right.”  Mom and Sis were finally able to sit down with her and take some measurements and that is how I received the recipe.
I was able to spend some time with Grannie Dot in December, and together we made her famous doughnuts for my little man and my nephews.  Time to pass that on to the next generation.

One day I’ll be the Grannie with the brown picnic basket.  We will all sit around and talk about how we all had I-phone’s, just like we laugh about Grannie Dot’s rag dolls.  Who knows, maybe we’ll watch Willy Wonka too!

what I missed

This post may be lost on most of you, but it was a rough weekend and start to the week for our house.
It all started on Sunday, when the youngest member of our family just wasn’t herself.  She really wasn’t running at even half speed, so we knew that something was up.  Monday was worse, and ended up with me calling the emergency line.  I was pretty certain that she wasn’t going to make it through the night.  Then came the Dr. visit and concerns that she had eaten something that was not so puppy friendly, and the x-ray’s, and then leaving with meds and a diagnose of a parasite.
A PARASITE!  How gross does that sound.  And how can one little tiny parasite practically kill my little pup in a matter of days?!
Nature is unforgiving sometimes.
It was a really quiet few days as we battled this thing, and took our meds right on time, twice a day.  I was more than concerned when the day came that the Dr said we should see a “remarkable improvement”  came and there was no change.   AT ALL.
She slept most of the day under the covers and shivering.
Then it was like a switch was flipped.   She woke up  and stretched, and then found her toy bone, and sat at my feet ready to play.
When I looked at her and her ears were perked up and her tail started wagging, I cried.  Seriously.
She tires out a little quicker than normal, but she’s back.
It’s amazing how much life she adds to this house and my day.  I missed it.  A lot.  A lot more than I thought I would.
Today I’m super grateful for antibiotics.   I’m grateful for people who study animals and know how to treat them.  I’m also grateful for those people who recognize that Sophie might just be a little doggie, but she is a HUGE part of my little family and they don’t judge me for talking about her like she is a little human.  Because she thinks she is, and will snarl at you if you think otherwise!

Three | KMC Newborn Photographer

For the last week I’ve had that old School House Rock Song, Three, stuck in my head.  There is that sweet little part in the middle that just gets me!  ”A man and a woman had a little baby.  Yes they did.  They had three in the family, and that’s a magic number!”  I’ve always thought of that as perfect for my own family, but as I sat down to write this post, it came to my mind again.  I think it’s perfect for this new little family of three!

The smallest little miss I’ve had the pleasure to meet.  She only weighed 4 pounds and 6 ounces when she was born.  Sweet little miracle.
